Sometimes I wish the visual reminders that everything I do falls apart weren't so...so...present.

And then you got a new cat. A smaller, more precocious kitten with big dark eyes and cute freckles. Awww...everybody loves kittens.

I think feral's a good word. It's as if you found a kitten while you were fishing, and so you took it home with you, bought it a porcelain china blue saucer that you kept filled with milk and kibble.
